5 fashion mistakes guys most often make

Avoid these common mistakes and instantly up your style quotient.

  1. Wearing sagging, baggy underwear. You might think choosing the right underwear hardly matters since it doesn’t show, but nothing is further from the truth. Today’s pant styles are cut trimmer and closer to the body so your bulky, droopy, stretched-out underwear is often visible under these slimmer trousers and jeans. What’s more, today’s luxury underwear combines cotton with tech fabrics (Modal, Tencel and other sustainable cellulose-based yarns) so that if you’re wearing your old stuff, you’re not getting the wonderful benefits that modern underwear provides: perfect fit, extra softness, sweat absorption, odor control, temperature control, anti-microbial properties and more. They might cost a bit more than the pre-packs, but you’ll find luxury briefs and boxers to be well worth the investment.
  2. Wearing the same size shirt collar that you wore in high school. Not only will you be uncomfortable (and unable to close the top button or two) but you’ll look much heavier in clothes that are too tight. So you were once a 15 ½ but now you’re a 17—who cares? Buy a few shirts in the right size and you’ll instantly look 10 pounds lighter (and 10 times happier).
  3. Matching your pocket square to your tie. No, this is not a prison-worthy offense but it’s considerably more sophisticated if your tie and pocket square relate but are not an exact match. If you’re unsure how to do this, let your favorite sales associate help you put together a few winning combinations. Also, to amortize your investment, make sure to wear those pocket squares with your sportcoat even when you’re not wearing a tie. It’s a cool look, adding style and personality without looking too formal.
  4. Wearing gym sneakers with your suit. Yes, it’s still cool to dress down your suit with sneakers but not the worn-out canvas Reeboks you wear on the basketball court. Come into the store and we’ll show you some fabulous new fashion-right sneakers from our top brands that will instantly upgrade your entire look.
  5. Not investing in a new suit because your old suits are “good enough” and you don’t want to spend money on something you don’t wear every day. Big mistake! A man’s suit says everything about him, whether he wears it daily or just on special occasions. Why risk making a bad impression when a one-time investment in a great suit can guarantee you’ll score points when it matters most? We can virtually guarantee that the suits hanging in your closet are too structured, with the jacket too long and the pants too baggy. But a new lightly constructed modern suit will fit you perfectly and you might find yourself wearing it a lot more often than you thought you would.
